Where the Heroes are

A family. Son Jons is severely handicapped. His head is on fire. At the age of seven, his parents make the hard, almost impossible, decision to let him live in an institution.

Ange Wieberdink got to know the family when Jons had already left home. She was able to film the family during some significant moments in their lives. The family also let her use home videos, photos from the family archives, and scenes from the theatre show that his mother made about Jons’ first years at home.

Where the heroes are offers a unique insight into the life of Jons, his parents and his sister. The family has to deal with great challenges but it is also a family like many others.

This documentary is made for Eigen Werk Theaterteam.
They are responsible for the distribution.

Deaf, so what!

Marie, Jascha and Björn are deaf. They attend a regular grammar school and take lessons with hearing pupils. There are interpreters in the classroom to help the deaf pupils to follow the lessons. How do these kids cope? How do their hearing classmates react? Is this a form of integration?

A New Day

A child with a disability – The first year with Dereyza

Saadet professionally guides parents with disabled children. Then it happens to her. She got a son with Down syndrome, Dereyza. ‘Why do I have such a child?’, she wonders. ‘Did I do anything wrong?’ She doesn’t want to visit the infant welfare centre, because there she will meet other mothers. ‘People watching and thinking: Ah, he is different. It hurts.’ Saadet’s husband Cem has mixed feelings as well. ‘At first, there was a distance. The love for Dereyza had to grow.’ After six months, they decide to take their son outside. Saadet: ‘When I’ll accept Dereyza, questions about him will be less painful.’

Ayse: The way she is

Ayse goes everywhere with her parents and has done so from an early age. In the week she visits an institution attended by others with a mental handicap. She speaks fluent Dutch and Turkish, but she can’t read or write. She can however compose poetry.

The main protagonist Ayse has a Turkish background but her story is relevant in a broader context. The film shows how she has become what she is now. What’s like to grow up with a limitation? And what’s like for the people around her?

Escaped

In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, the Dutch Lon Verstijnen and the French Christine Bénedite were imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. The Allied Forces were advancing and the Nazis decided to clear the camps. They put the prisoners on forced marches, the so called death marches. Lon and Christine, together with seven other women managed to escape. As a group of nine, in six days they crossed hostile Germany and all of them reached the American troops. Three out of nine wrote about the adventures. Their diaries have been used in this film. Lon and Christine are now over 90. Still they never forgot that journey. They have never seen each other since.
